Zahn focuses on the character in moments, not how Thrawn fits into the larger universe and how he effects that universe. There is also a lack of universe expansion. There are story elements missing there to explain it. Seven years into a relationship and he still questions things too much. Even after countless successes Thrawn is constantly doubted and questioned by his ally's.

Some characters also don't show arcs well. Audiobook version of I didn't pay attention for a minute I would often come back and feel like I missed a chapter or two. The few changes from old EU Thrawn are all still believable. Weaving in support characters you can tell where Disney had some direction for character inclusion, as the story has too much of them and they are somewhat forced.
